Dear Student,

I am so happy to have you in my class!  Your teacher and I will work very hard together to make sure that you have a successful year in reading and language arts.
The world is changing, and the way in which we communicate with each other is so different than it once was.  As you know, we spend a lot of time talking to each other using the computer.  You probably already know how to use e-mail.  People will be getting to know you just by how you read and write!  This is one of the reasons it is so important to become a good reader and a good writer.
Another reason to read and to write is because it is fun!  You can go on an adventure or visit a foreign country just by reading about it!  You can read funny stories or even comic books.  You can tell your friends stories or secrets by writing letters or sending them e-mail.
Of course, one of the most important reasons to read and to write is to learn about new things.  You can learn about something you are interested in like motorcycles, or sea creatures, or anything!  You can learn about the things your teacher talks about in class by reading books or finding information on the Internet.
As you can see, becoming a good reader and a good writer is one of the most important things you can do in your life.  Sometimes, you might have a hard time reading or writing, but it is something that we can fix together.  If you do your part by following directions, completing your work, and most importantly, reading every night, I will do everything I can to make reading and writing an easier part of your life.  We will also have fun doing it!
If you have any questions or want to tell me any ideas you have that will help you become a better reader and writer, just let me know.  I am looking forward to working with you this year!

                                                                                                          Sincerely,

                                                                                                          Miss Spott
